The Public Works Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of all city roads, the water and sewer systems, storm sewers and the maintenance of city-owned equipment. The department consists of four operating divisions: Engineering, Street, Utility and Central Garage. The Engineering Division coordinates the planning, design and construction of all public streets and utility projects, including right-of way acquisition, and maintains records on all public improvements that have been made within the city. This division also prepares feasibility reports and performs inspections of the capital improvement projects. Other activities include special assessments, traffic operations, grading permits, utility permits, and overseeing the preparation of city maps. The Utility Division is composed of the water and sanitary sewer operations. This division operates and maintains wells, water storage facilities, water mains, sanitary sewer lines and lift stations, and fire hydrants. Utility workers also read water meters. The Street Division is responsible for maintenance, repair and snow plowing of local streets and cul-de-sacs. It is also responsible for maintaining traffic signals, street name and regulatory signs, storm sewer and ponding areas, pavement markings and for tree trimming along boulevards. The Central Garage Division is responsible for the purchase, maintenance, repair, and replacement of city vehicles and equipment. Engineering and Public Works Department Mission Statement |
