Roundabouts

Aerial view of the Bailey Road/Radio Drive roundabout.

A modern roundabout is an unsignalized circular intersection used to maximize safety, minimize traffic delay, and provide aesthetic benefits.

Roundabouts are currently located within the City of Woodbury: a multi-lane roundabout at Radio Drive and Bailey Road, and a single-lane roundabout at Settlers Ridge Parkway and Lake Road in the Stonemill Farms development. In addition, five single-lane roundabouts located along Hargis Parkway and one on Pioneer Drive south of Bailey Road provide access to East Ridge High School.

City Considering Future Roundabouts
Roundabouts are a form of traffic control the city is currently considering at new and reconstructed intersections. For intersections that require more capacity than can be provided at two-way stop or all-way stop intersections, a detailed study of each intersection will be performed to determine whether a traffic signal or roundabout is most appropriate. Roundabouts are generally most effective at intersections with the following characteristics:

  • Location with high incidents of right angle or turning traffic crashes.
  • Locations with complex geometry.
  • Locations with frequent left-turn movements.
  • Locations where traffic flows from opposing directions are fairly balanced.
  • At isolated locations or outside a series of traffic signals that are spaced close together. (Placing a roundabout in the middle of a series of traffic signals would disrupt any coordinated timing that may exist.)

How to Navigate a Roundabout
When entering a roundabout, motorists should remember to follow these simple steps:

  1. Slow down as you approach the intersection. Drive defensively!
  2. Select proper lane (if navigating a multi-lane roundabout) based on signing and striping.
  3. Yield to ALL vehicles already in the roundabout.
  4. Do not pass vehicles or change lanes within the roundabout.
  5. If you encounter an emergency vehicle, continue to your planned exit.
