Woodbury Police Canine UnitNew Pups on Police ForcePosted: July 24, 2008 For nearly six years the doggie duo of Andy and Shadow served the city as police dogs for the Woodbury Public Safety Department. In 2007, two new canine cadets, Levi and Niko, filled their roles. Levi, a German Shepherd from Slovakia, completed patrol dog training in October 2007 and started working in the field. He arrived in Woodbury in August 2007. His handler, officer Jeff Gottstein, said Levi is gaining experience in the field but is still a big puppy, enjoying playing fetch and running to greet people during his free time. Niko is a Belgian Malinois and also arrived in August 2007. He joined the team in early November 2007 and is eager to be on the job, often whining on days with little action in the field. His handler is officer Jason Posel. The previous police pups, Andy and Shadow, retired in the summer of 2006 due to health concerns. Each is enjoying time at home sleeping, playing and watching television. The four-legged officers assist the Police Department with patrol duties, and by protecting their partner and making community appearances at events such as Woodbury Days and Safety Camp. The Police Canine Unit is supported by funds from the Woodbury Public Safety Board, a non-profit organization that supports the Public Safety Department.
