Model Lawn Project

The Woodbury Model Lawn Project is located at 2958 Magnolia Drive in Woodbury and is sponsored by the city's Environmental Advisory Commission, Orrin Thompson Homes, and Composting Concepts. The purpose of the project is to educate residents, developers and others on the benefits of preparing a lawn in an environmentally friendly manner, which will reduce the need for fertilizer and water.

The model lawn was prepared using these installation techniques:

  1. Spread 1 to 2 inches of compost or topsoil over the final grade.
  2. Add 10 lbs. of a 10-10-10 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet of lawn area.
  3. Incorporate the above into the top 6 to 8 inches with a power rototiller or tiller mounted on the back of a small tractor.
  4. Rake or drag lawn for the final grade in preparation for seed or sod.
  5. Seed or sod.

These steps will ensure a healthier lawn over time and can save water use by 20 to 30 percent.

If you'd like more information on the model lawn, please contact the city at (651) 714-3500 and ask for the "Welcome to the Model Lawn" brochure.
