Woodbury Heritage Society

Contact name: John Seemann

Web site: www.woodburyheritage.org

Organization description: Mission Statement – To preserve and document Woodbury’s history and to aid residents of our community in learning and understanding more about Woodbury’s early years.

The Woodbury Heritage Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization founded in October 1983. Interest in local history was spurred by the Woodbury history book, Woodbury, A Past to Remember, published in 1976. A board of directors governs the society's activities. Elections to the board are held each spring at the annual meeting. A newsletter is sent to all members to provide news of the organization.

Membership meetings are held occasionally during the year, presenting programs of interest to both long-time and new residents of the community. These programs have featured Woodbury’s country schools, early roads in the city, family history nights, oral history workshops, gardening with heirloom plants, and educational tours. An annual potluck is held during the holiday season.

The Woodbury Heritage Society maintains a family/city history research room in the Woodbury City Hall, 8301 Valley Creek Road. Census, church and land records, family histories, and help with genealogical research are available. In recent years requests for information from our records have come from school classes, scout groups and local media, in addition to family history researchers, both local and out-state. The research room at Woodbury City Hall is open during daytime hours by appointment only. To set up an appointment, call (651) 714-3564 and leave a message or contact John Seemann, Woodbury Heritage Society president, at (651) 738-3675.

In addition to the research room the Society, in cooperation with the City of Woodbury, operates and maintains a historical house, garden, and tree park at the corner of Lake Road and Radio Drive. The Heritage Garden displays local heirloom plants, a vegetable garden and a butterfly garden. Many trees have been planted around the house and garden site to beautify the grounds. These trees were purchased with markers to memorialize relatives and friends who have ties to Woodbury. The attractive walkway to the entrance of the building contains engraved steppers also memorializing relatives and friends. Trees and steppers are still available for purchase. The Society hosts an open house at the Heritage House and Garden the second and fourth Sunday of each month, June through September, from 1 to 4 p.m.

If you are supportive of the work of the Woodbury Heritage Society, we invite you to become a member. Annual dues are $10 per member. For information call John Seemann at (651) 738-3675, or the Heritage Society’s research room at (651) 714-3564. You also may e-mail us at: jseemann@comcast.net.
