January 8, 2003

The Honorable Mayor

Members of the City Council

City of Woodbury

Council Members:

Subject: Gravel Pit Semi-Annual Review

SITE REVIEWS

The two gravel pit operations currently active in Woodbury have been recently inspected as part of the semi-annual review of the special use permits. The following is a summary of the review for each pit.

M.Danner Inc. Special Use Permit 80-19

Location: Southwest quadrant of Bailey Road and Mile Drive

Mining operations continue at the M. Danner Gravel Pit. Approximately 175,000 tons of material was mined from the south-central and northeast areas of the pit in 2002. Mining activities will continue in those two areas of the pit for the first six months in 2003. Mining activities are consistent with the revised grading / restoration plan submitted by the owner in the fall of 2001. Restoration activities have been suspended pending the City’s decision to purchase the property. The City is considering purchasing the M.Danner gravel pit for future storm water ponding opportunities and is in the process of completing a land value appraisal and potential concept plan. Negotiations with the pit owner will commence once these activities are completed.

Twin City Silica Special Use Permit 72-07

Location: One-quarter mile south of Hudson Road on Cottage Grove Drive

Mining operations have progressed into the southeast portion of the pit were topsoil was stripped during the fall of 2002. Mining is also being completed in the southwest corner of the pit. Restoration activities are following the mining operation and also along the north boundary from where the previously stockpiled slag material is being removed. Mining, restoration and slag material removal will continue in these areas in 2003.

This annual gravel pit review is for Council information only, no Council action is required for this item.

Respectfully submitted,

Barry P. Johnson

City Administrator
