SUBJECT: |
Stop Sign Installation Newbury Road at Lydia Lane |
SUMMARY
Due to the amount of traffic being generated by the New Life Academy on Lydia Lane at Newbury Road, additional traffic control signage should be installed at their entrance. According to the City’s "Placement of Stop Signs" policy, the installation of a two-way stop sign is warranted and is consistent with requirements described in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended the City Council adopt the attached resolution authorizing the installation of two-way stop signs on Newbury Road at Lydia Lane.
BUDGET IMPACT
Street signage, including stop signs, are purchased annually by the Street Division through their operating supplies budget. The estimated cost for two stop signs, posts, and hardware is $250. However, no new purchases will be necessary for this installation since sufficient signage is in inventory.
BACKGROUND
The Wyndham Ponds development, a.k.a. Windom Ponds, began construction in 2002. During that same time the New Life Academy began construction of a significant addition to their school. Now that the addition is complete and homes are occupied in the Wyndham Ponds development, City staff has received requests from both residents and New Life Academy staff that additional traffic control is needed on Newbury Road at Lydia Lane. This intersection is a four-legged intersection. The north and south legs are Lydia Lane, the east leg is Newbury Road, and the west leg is a private street entering New Life Academy.
Due to the amount of traffic being generated by New Life Academy during the morning and evening peak hours, staff feels that the installation of stop signs are warranted on the east and west legs of the intersection (see attached map for proposed stop sign installation locations).
PROJECT STEPS
Stop Signs – Two-way traffic control stop signs are proposed to be installed on Newbury Road at Lydia Lane.
